We spend all day talking about Architecting $1.2M Systems, but if the humans in your system think you’re a jerk, they’ll put sugar in your metaphorical gas tank.

Navigating office politics isn't about being "fake." It's about being efficiently charming. You want to offer just enough support so that everyone owes you a "favor credit," but not so much that you've accidentally become the department's therapist. If you’re spending four hours a day listening to Brenda talk about her cat’s gluten allergy, your ROI on empathy has hit rock bottom.

The goal is to avoid the "Cancer" label. We’ve all seen it: Misery loves company, and it usually invites company over for a 2-hour vent session that should have been a Slack message. Don't be that guy. Be the "Social Positive." When people like you, they’ll fight for your budget, cover your blind spots, and—most importantly—leave you alone when you’re in "Deep Work" mode.

Think of office politics as Elvis Politics. You want to walk in, deliver the hits, be incredibly charismatic, and then leave the building before anyone starts asking for an encore. You put on just enough of a show so that they’re there for you when you need it, but you never stay so long that you become part of the furniture.
